The silence is peaceful

The silence is peaceful
My friends now are distant
And lo and behold
I am cast out from the herd.

I’d lie if I told you
It isn’t heartbreaking
But love that I see is still all around
And mostly in my child’s eyes.

Cosmically guided
I’m one with you all, for I do accept you
And wish you no harm
Especially if it justifies somebody’s plan.

And I stand by the stove
The garbage truck rattling below on the street.
The sounds of the onions I’m frying,
The smell of the Earth—oh, so very sweet.
